Brad Mergen struck out 12 in seven innings of work as Farming beat St. Martin 9-6 in a matchup of SCL-South rivals.
The Flames scored a single run in the first, then exploded for four in the fourth. Craig Klein blasted a long two-run homer to left, scoring Chris Wehseler ahead of him. Later in the inning, Brad Mergen hit a sharp single to right scoring two more runs. After St. Martin has closed the cap to 5-4 in the top of the eighth, the Flames responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
Nick Mergen's return to townball was a successful one, as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Aaron Einyck was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs, and Brad Mergen was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Dylan Panek went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Mitchell Thelen and Joel Klein also had hits for Farming.
Brad started and got the victory for the Flames by pitching the first seven innings. He was followed by big brother Brent Mergen and then Kyle Zierden, who recorded the final out to get the save. The Flames played errorless ball in the field.
Farming now stands 3-1 in the SCL-South Division, just a game behind leader Lake Henry. Next week, undefeated New Munich visits Farming Ballpark for a 1:30pm tilt versus the Flames. Come on out and support the club -- it should be a great ballgame with plenty of atmosphere.
