Brad Mergen's based-loaded single in the bottom of the tenth lifted the Flames to a 5-4 win over Roscoe.
Farming was down 3-0 early before scoring two runs in the second. Chris Wehsler led off with a double to left, and Craig Klein was hit by a pitched. After a strkeout, Kyle Zierden hit into a fielder's choice, putting runners on first and third with two out. Taylor Fourre hit a clutch two-run triple down the right field line to bring the Flames within one.
In the bottom of the fifth, Farming tied the game up with two more runs. After the first two batters were out, Mitchell Thelen singled, and Aaron Einyck was hit b a pitch. Brad Mergen followed with a two-run double, scoring Mitchell and sending Aaron to third. Aaron then scored on a passed ball, tying the ballgame at 4.
Both teams put up gooseggs until the bottom of the 10th, when Brent Mergen led off with a single down the third base line. Mitchell Thelen followed with an infield hit, and Aaron Einyck laid down a perfect bunt along the third base line to put the sacks full. Brad Mergen followed with a line single to left giving Farming the dramatic victory.
For the Flames, Kyle Zierden went the first six innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits, and striking out four. Brad Mergen pitched the final three innings to improve to 8-1 on the season, surrending one hit and striking out seven.
Brad Mergen was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI's, and Taylor Fourre was 1-for-4 with a triple and two more RBI's. Mitchell Thelen was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, Craig Klen was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, and Chris Wehseler went 2-for-4 with a double. Kyle Zierden scored the other run for Farming.
After the ballgame, the 1986 Farming Flames ballclub, which won regions that year and played at the state tournament, were honored in a nice ceremony at home plate. That team went 9-4 on the year, and qualified for the state tournament with a nice run at Regions. After the ceremony, players from that 1986 team hit three balls each off of a tee, and several balls were hit well into the outfield.
The win improves Farming's SCL-South record to 10-1 on the season, and 15-4-1 overall. Next up for the Flames is a trip to St. Martin this coming Friday for an 8:30pm matchup with the Martins, under the lights. Come on out on Friday and support the ballclub in this so-far magical season!
